Lexington City Schools - New Charles England Intermediate School

Lexington, NC

RBSA has a long-standing relationship with Lexington City Schools, providing both minor and major architectural services as needs arise. After performing small renovation projects on the former Charles England Intermediate Campus in 2002 and 2004, the system decided to build a new facility. This new facility is based on Elizabeth Hanford Dole Elementary School which we designed and delivered to Rowan Salisbury Schools.

This H-plan prototype provides clear circulation, grouping of activities to minimize construction costs and provide public access to after-hour uses while limiting access to classrooms. Access platforms run continuously above the corridors to allow maintenance staff the ability to service mechanical equipment without disturbing school functions. These platforms serve a dual role as safety escape corridors in event of emergency.
