Catawba College - Corriher-Linn-Black Library Renovations
Salisbury, NC
RBSA was pleased to extend an already long working relationship with Catawba College when asked to design and
plan for a new Comprehensive Academic Center as well as renovations to the existing campus academic library. The
proposed Academic Center connected to and expanded the existing library out towards the ecological preserve, an
integral part of the Catawba campus and curriculum. The building program for the Center included all the
traditional library services with added focus to serve as a place to seek information, find information and
share information. A large two-story entry was dedicated to an Information Commons and the building featured
Study Rooms, Seminar and Presentation Rooms and a large Lecture Hall. Plans also included relocating Information
Tech Services to the new facility. RBSA’s proposed designs included plans to reach LEED Silver Status.
While the Center was not constructed, RBSA did complete the renovations to the existing library. RBSA
coordinated the abatement and selective demolition of the existing academic library with the College’s
Construction Manager and a local General Contractor. The renovation designs updated the entire facility with two
large open computer labs, a Bibliographic Instruction Lab, numerous Study Rooms and reconfiguration of
Administrative Offices. The lower level of the library was dedicated to traditional as well as high density
shelving while the Mezzanine level was enclosed with a continuous aluminum storefront wall system. Exterior
renovations included a main entry ramp and large reading patio.
