Caswell County – Gunn Memorial Public Library - Renovation & Addition

Yanceyville, NC

2019 NC Public Library Director’s Association Award - Outstanding New & Improved Facility

RBSA worked with Library Director, Rhonda Griffin on an existing collection study and space needs analysis that set project goals and ultimately, created a flexible building program. This expansion project included a complicated renovation of the existing library built in 1965 with a small addition completed in 1982. The existing flat roof was in disrepair and included asbestos containing materials. Our design gave the entire facility a face lift by installing a metal panel hip roof over the existing and a shed roof over the new addition. A prominent new entry was created by way of a two story clerestory space located in the center of the library. This center space fills with natural light and highlights the circulation desk and allows staff visual monitoring of the library.
